Recap: MTV VMA's 2010

I've finally garned up enough strength to recap the amazing (well, stage anyway) MTV VMA's from last night.  I'm sure I'm not alone in the way I feel about last night's performances (or lack thereof).

If anyone else had opened, I would have probably turned it off and gone to bed.  Eminem entered the 60's  mod-chic inspired stage and showed the audience that he is still Not Afraid.  Joining him on stage, Rihanna brought back her fire red hair and belted out a few lines of Love the Way You Lie.  Chelsea Handler's Lady Gaga inspired opening was hilarious, but her humor soon derailed as the jokes about Kanye, Taylor Swift and has-been reality stars continued.  MTV once again forgot that these award were about music, not crap reality television or tensions between musicians.

Lady Gaga won the majority of the awards for the night and I must say, despite her elaborate Alexander McQueen dress and insane meat dress, the way she presented herself during her speeches is something to be applauded.  She's never one to disregard her fans (Little Monsters) and she let us all know of her soon to be next album title, Born This Way.  She even sang a few lines of the chorus, while accepting the Video of the Year award.  The stripped down Gaga is the one I love the most; no dance beats - just her voice.  It shows her vulnerability and her true skill as an artist.

There were too many lip-synched performances that were done in amateur ways (Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, even Usher) and too many lackluster performances from musicians who normally shine (Usher, Drake & Haley Williams).  Robyn was robbed of her time to shine (though the 15 seconds on camera she didn't hold back) and Linkin Park rocked out to the setting sun at the legendary Griffith Observatory with their new single Catalyst.

The best performance of the night was definitely Florence + the Machine.  The ethereal Florence Welch stole this show with her crimson hair and by simply singing the crap out of a great song (Dog Days Are Over).  This is what the VMA's needs more of.  Take note MTV - stop with the antics about Kanye and Jersey Shore and get back to what you were once known for.  Great music.
