A few years ago...

I was introduced to Charlotte Martin from first hearing her "Everytime it Rains." A couple friends and I drove to Hartford and waited painfully thru several acts before Charlotte was to take the stage at this tiny, dive bar downtown. After a couple of beers and hours had passed, we finally asked someone if they knew when Charlotte would be coming out...... she wouldn't be! She apparently got sick and couldn't sing that night. We left down and out... but I don't hold it against her, her voice is her job and when it's broken, well, you can't work. This version of The Cure's "Just Like Heaven" she did on her "Reproductions" album (a CD of cover songs) is one of my ultimate favorite songs. It is a beautiful version and she really brings out the beauty of the lyrics.

just one of those 80's big hair bands....

I cannot believe I came across this today.. Europe actually has a new album that was released? The 80's hair band, with their hits "Carrie" and "Final Countdown." It was released in Sweden in early September and will be releasing next month in the UK. It has no set release date for the states. I honestly am in shock - I didn't think they were still around! And I am just finding out that the band that got me through School Patrol Camp when I was in fifth grade, is back at it again! WITH THEIR EIGTH STUDIO RELEASE! Once again Sweden, you rock my world! Who knew?!

the latest BRITNEY

"3" -- it's all about threesomes... Old Brit Brit is back!

Mika is GaGa

Mika does his own version of Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" on the BBC Radio 1 Live!

MORE GIRL POWER!!

Thank you Perez. Carrie Underwood's latest video!

September 29th, 2009: A day of Girl Power

Tomorrow, 5 major female artists (though some may argue one of these) are dropping new CDs, compilations and/or new singles. Britney Spears will drop her newest Max Martin produced single, "3." This will be featured on her late October release of her Greatest Hits, her first ever. (Unfortunately we haven't been able to score a leak on this one yet.) The beautiful & Dancing With the Stars Mya will release her newest album "Beauty & the Streets," featuring Bun B. We are totally digging her latest single here because it's as if she has learned a few lessons from Ciara. Mariah Carey will drop her 12th studio album, "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel." We haven't been loving her single "Obsessed" and really want to see MC return to her days of Pop Ballads and curly locks! Madonna will also be dropping her greatest hits album with her latest single, "Celebration." We here at WonkyPop LOVE LOVE LOVE this single and the video.... it grew on us rather rapidly! We also believe Madonna is doing this Greatest Hits to get out of her current record contract and move on over with Live Nation. Good for you Madge! And finally, the ever so popular Barbara Streisand will be releasing her "Love is the Answer," a collection of jazz standards.

A little Rainbow on a gloomy Friday

Though Jason Mraz has not been around that long, the song "Rainbow Connection" goes all the way back to 1981. I adore Jason's version of this song. Happy Flashback Friday everyone!

Here is the original Muppet Movie version!

From Connecticut to you...

While enjoying some time here in southern Connecticut with family and friends, my good good friend "The Grey Dahlia" sent me this video. I must say, WOW. Alexandra Burke was that sweet, girl who won X Factor last year, after the incredibly talented Leona Lewis. And her Jeff Buckley version of "Hallelujah" is still one of my favorite covers... and now, her latest single is featuring Flo-Ri-Da. Talk about a 180 from Jeff Buckley! This song is off the hook though, totally dig the beat! Enjoy!

Y? N-Vee

This week's Flashback Friday....
Y?N-Vee (Pronounced: why envy) was an American female R&B group that formed in the early 1990s on the Island Def Jam label. The bands success was short lived; they scored three charting singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart, including their biggest hit "Freedom" which featured Aaliyah, BlackGirl, En Vogue, For Real, TLC, Vanessa L. Williams among others from the Panther soundtrack. Their self-titled debut album Y?N-Vee was released on October 18, 1994, it peaked at No.75 on the Billboard 200 album chart. After seeing a few of these videos, you will know why it was short-lived....

We here at Wonky Pop can't leave you on a fabulous Friday with THAT though.... so we will end this week with the great Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men singing live, "One Sweet Day." Mariah Carey has been seen sporting her old locks these days- let's hope that means on her new album, she'll return to some of her old pop tunes as well!

THANK YOU AGAIN WHITNEY!

WHITNEY has totally thrown us a curveball here at Wonky Pop. Upon first listen of her album, we weren't overly impressed. By the third listen, we were hooked. Alicia Keys wrote "Million Dollar Bill" for Whitney's latest album, "I Look To You" (which shot to #1 on the charts!) and we thank Alicia for that! You look great Whitney!

Madonna - waited too long for this!!

Madonna is bringing it back a bit old school with her video for "Celebration." Saw this for the first time a couple weeks back and we here at Wonky Pop are just LOVING it! Especially when Madonna's daughter Lourdes does a BACKFLIP in the video!

Leona is Happy

The incredibly talented and beautiful Leona Lewis is back with her latest single, "Happy." Here she is singing it on "America's Got Talent" from last night. We here at Wonky Pop cannot wait for her new album to drop!

Kaci Battaglia is hotter than I thought!

In her video premiere for "Crazy Possessive," Kaci fights herself in the pool at a dive Motel. Still dig this beat, the song and the lyrics!

A Fine Frenzy's louder side

Just released, A Fine Frenzy's follow-up album to her 2007 successful first record release, here is "Blow Away." I am so excited to review this album and see how her style has changed on the new album. Let's face it, "Almost Lover" is an incredible song but sometimes, we need something a bit more upbeat rather than wanting to slit our wrists (dramatic, but true!).

YES YES YES - Jay Z & Alicia Keys = good stuff

Jay Z is BACK. And with Alicia Keys & Mary J Blige, he is going to blow Kanye out of the water. Thank you, Jay Z!

Janet is BACK

Janet Jackson has dropped her latest single, "Make Me," on her very own label (as she is no longer contractually obligated to anyone). It's not too bad- sounds a bit classic Janet!

WHITNEY, I will give you THIS one.

You look beautiful, Ms. Whitney Houston. The lyrics of this song were beautiful contrived and you do it justice. I do miss your power, your range and your intensity with ballads, but you really do this song well. I applaud you for coming back around after the trials, troubles and tribulations. Welcome back. (PS, I would like to ignore the fact that R.Kelly wrote this song, but he did...)

We were curious, and picked up Miley's new EP...

...and we at Wonky Pop are not ashamed to admit, we love her new single, "When I Look At You." Maybe it's partly due to personal circumstances (wink) or it's the simplicity of the words, and the powerful ballad that be. We dig it!

1984, Cyndi Lauper

"Time After Time" was a single by singer Cyndi Lauper, the second from her album She's So Unusual. It reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart on June 9, 1984, and remained there for two weeks. Worldwide, the song is her most commercially successful single after "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," and reached number 3 on the UK Singles Chart and number 6 on the ARIA Singles Chart.
"Time After Time" was nominated for "Song of the Year" at the 1985 Grammy Awards. The ballad is considered a classic of the 1980s and is still played frequently on adult contemporary radio. The song is known for its numerous covers by a wide range of artists. "Time After Time" has been covered, either in live performance or on a recording, by at least 120 different artists across a broad spectrum of genres!

Introducing......Jason Myles Goss

Move over John Mayer, there's a new guy in town. I appreciate Jason's voice-- it's in a lower range than John Mayer's or Jason Mraz and it's smooth and romantic. He is a self-created, self-released album artist and for that, I applaud him. His talent is evident and he is surely under appreciated. Take a listen, let me know what you think!
The first song is "Twilight Serenade" (also referred to as "Another Ghost") and a live video of his "Mississippi Red." For fans of Secondhand Serenade, you will also appreciate Jason, minus all the whining that SHS seems to do from time to time.

UK + Pixie + Kings of Leon = brilliant

For fans of Kings of Leon and Girl Power, here's Pixie Lott singing Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody."

BRILLIANT PIXIE! Thank you!

introducing....... Ingrid Michaelson

I warmly welcome the sounds of New York native, Ingrid Michaelson. For those of you who love Sarah Bareilles, Colbie Calliat, Tristan Prettyman and even the classic Lisa Loeb, Ingrid will have a great appeal to you. I am really enjoying her, and this song has already made my day brighter! I also think she does a better job than Colbie on Jason Mraz's "Lucky."

Flashback Fridays: Ace of Base "The Sign"

Spending six weeks at #1 on the US Billboard charts and hailing all the way from Sweden, Ace of Base "The Sign" beat out their first hit smash, "All That She Wants." I've always related the two songs to pregnancy... "all that she wants, is another baby, she's gone tomorrow boy..." and "I saw the sign, and it opened up my eyes and I am happy now living without you..." -- could she have taken a pregnancy test for "The Sign" and she found out she is pregnant with "all that she wants?" Food for thought!

Thank you, Carrie Underwood- NEW SINGLE!

It's artists like Carrie Underwood that I love and respect. Her team actually wants to get the word out about her upcoming new single and soon to be new album....... they will let people such as myself, re-post their video on a blog such as this, for all of you to hear! I totally dig her new single (think back to her first album and "Before He Cheats.").
