Dunno why but totally digging this

Normally, I'm not a big fan of Benny Benassi.  I'm not really a "beat & bass" type of music lover.  But this song, thanks to Kelis, is quite catchy.  He's totally taken lessons from Black Eyed Peas and David Guetta, because this is not your typical Benassi.  Maybe Benny's 5th studio album (due out later this year) will surprise me... maybe.

Acoustic + ALphabet = beautiful!

Still one of my favorite bands (PLEASE solo tour the USA already!) - Alphabeat performs an acoustic version of their "DJ (I Could Be Dancing)."  They sound absolutely great!

And here's their original version:

Hot off from SF Pride

Saw these kids at SF Pride this weekend- and they are going to be hitting the radio waves quite soon. Just you wait! Nikki & Rich come from very different backrounds (Nikki Leonti, for all you CCM music lover was her solo career name & was a backup singer most recently for Carrie Underwood) and Rich, a former DJ and producer for big names such as Robin Thicke. Their sound is a fresh-pop-jazz sound and this song is just freakin' fun!

Tuesday's Album You can't live without

Expecting to have a fantastic, fun-filled summer?  Well you're gonna need this Brit rapper's album "Won't Go Quietly."  Not much is known about Example, but this CD just dropped last week and it's sa-weet.  It's Sam Sparro meets Kid Cudi meets MGMT.  How can you go wrong?!  Get it now! GO! What the hell are you waiting for?!!  Seriously!

Backstreet's Back, alright

Though the Backstreet Boys only performed 2.5 songs, they still got it.  17 years and going strong, the BSB's performed at this year's San Francisco Pride on Sunday afternoon.  It was fun to see the fans go crazy, just like they did 10 years ago when I saw them in Madison, Wisconsin during their Millenium tour.

Preview: King of Anything

Sara Barielles will be releasing her first video from her upcoming album "Kaliedascope Heart" very shortly... in the meanwhile, here is a trailer teaser of "King of Anything." Love this girl.  Great tune after such a long, fun, drink & sun-filled weekend!

Gayest.Posting.Ever.

It's San Francisco Pride (and NYC pride, Minnesota & Chicago pride) this weekend and in honor of that gayness, my gayness and the gayness of this blog, here are some of my favorite queer tunes for the summer (and acts coming to San Francisco in honor of pride or this summer).  Gay enough for you?

Happy Pride everyone!  Be safe this weekend!

Thank you Maroon 5

...thank you for putting this song out there to cure my ears from the pain of Miley's shiz.  This song is good!  Can't wait for your new album in September!  This fall is gonna be good!

Maroon 5 - Misery

History Repeats Itself

Curiosity got the best of me and I decided to take a listen of Miley "Horse-teeth" Cyrus' new album "Can't Be Like Britney Tamed."  I must admit, the first time I heard "Can't Be Tamed" I wasn't all that into it.  Reminded me too much of Britney's Toxic days.  I mean, even that video starts with a freaking bird!  Though the song has grown on me a little, it's still not something I aspire to dress to in the morning.  I've gotta be drunk and surrounded by an Asian invasion of gays to enjoy it (ie. an evening at Badlands).  Apparently only when Miley is playing the role of Hannah Montana can she release a successful album.  Now I completely understand why she is dressing like something Lady Gaga's nose blew out onto the streets of New York.  Even Katy Perry has more class than that!

A brief review of "Can Be Lame" (in no particular order):
"Two More Lonely People" - Why do images of Kim Cattrall & Andrew McCarthy romping in a department store tent, pop into my head? Could it be because this is a total rip of Starship's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now?"  Or it could just be visions of Hollywood Montrose, due to the gayness of this so called dance song.  Either way, disappointed Miley.

"Who Owns My Heart" - lyrics like "is it love or is it art" prove that Miley is still a Disney kid at heart.

"Take Me Along" - eh, an okay ballad.

"Stay" - same as above.

"Liberty Walk" - could these lyrics be any more retarded?!

"My Heart Beats for Love" - this song actually has potential and reminds me of the sweeter days of Hannah Montana.  Stick to this Miley, this is why lil' girls like you.

"Robot" - potential for a good dance anthem- someone do a remix QUICK.

"Scars" - a more driven rock song - more in the Hannah Montana style.

"Every Rose Has Its Thorn" - If you're gonna cover a song from a great hair band of the 80's like Poison, at least do it justice.  You failed Miley.  You totally turned this song into a "I'm a gay cowboy" ballad.  Who decided to add the 1982 synth in the background?  Quite lame!  Take a lesson from Carrie Underwood.

"Forgiveness & Love" - this ballad still isn't as good as your "The Climb."  What happened to your mediocre writers?  Did they disappear when your clothes did?

"Can't Be Tamed" - Britney. Toxic. 'nough said.

Two More Lonely People - Miley Cyrus by Wonky Pop

REplay: Robert Palmer

If anyone can take a classic 80's iconic song such as Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" and make it their own, it's Florence and the Machine.  This song was on a recent episode of So You Think You Can Dance (the only reason I like that show is for the songs, could care less about the dancers!).  Happy Hump day!

New video from my fav Cary Brothers & Album You Can't Live Without!

Cary Brothers has premiered his latest single & video "Ghost Town" today.  Beautiful song, great video!  Cary's latest "Under Control" is also Tuesday's Album You Can't Live Without!  This album is incredible, from beginning to end.  Thanks Cary!

Sara B to release new album September 7th!

Sara Barilles will be releasing her sophomore album "Kaleidoscope Heart" on September 7th of this year.  I wish it wasn't so long... King of Anything is a great song but that's not enough to hold me over until September!  Please push for an early release Sara!

Love this girl

Janelle Monae is going to go places this year.  She is definitely one to watch.  If you haven't heard her first single off of her sophomore album "Tightrope" you're missing out.

She's also covered one of Michael Jackson's favorite songs (written by Charlie Chaplain) "Smile."  This cover is absolutely beautiful - and really captures the essence of Janelle's greatness.

My thoughts exactly: You again??

He's back.  The Mambo No. 5 one-hit-wonder turned Burger King commercial and now a new album.  A little bit of Monica by my side... a little bit of throw up in my mouth!  Lou Bega, what the hell is this?  Ironically, he has a song titled "I'm a Singer" on his latest album.  WTF?  That's it.  If Lou Bega can have a "comeback" album, and Danielle Staub can sing with a lesbian, then I can have my own damn album.  I'm gonna call it "Willie Wonky: It's My Candy".

BSB's and NKOTB - for real.

Screaming girls EVERYWHERE.  Even in their late 20's and early 30's, die-hard Backstreet Boys & New Kids On the Block fans were crying out for more.

Who did it better?

On Sia's latest album "We Are Born," (coming out tomorrow) she does a cover of Madonna's "Oh Father."  And as much as I like the original, I really like Sia's version of the song... in fact, I like it better.  Sia's latest album is pure brilliance!  Songs that really got my goat/chicken/egg are "I'm In Here," "You've Changed," "Clap Your Hands" and "The Fight."  Lurve it Sia!

First one not so well received, onto the ballad!

Smart move, Ms. Aguilera.  This is going to be a mother effing hit!  Christina Aguilera's team has decided to release the Sia collaborated song "You Lost Me" as the next single from her latest album "Bionic."  Despite her #3 spot on the Billboard charts for the album's debut, Christina's team is apparently taking a different approach to the album and really showcasing her voice.  Let's hope this boosts sales and the attention that she deserves on her latest work of brilliance.

Introducing...Phildel

I listen to my Twitter fans.  Though I may not be on there much, or tweet a lot, I do watch to see who is following me. Recently, Phildel in London began following my Tweets and so I checked out her music.

If I had to make comparisons, I would say Phildel is a delightful blend of Regina Spektor, Enya, Imogen Heap and Bjork.  All of who are favorites of mine and have been featured on Wonky Pop.  But if you really listen to Phildel, she has her own sound amongst these great artists.

Her latest EP "Tales From the Moonsea" is eerily beautiful.  Songs such as "Storm Song" & "The Dream" grabbed my attention instantly.  I definitely feel that Phildel is one to watch.  Her EP and her instrumental album "Qi" are both available on iTunes (dang, my first purchase on iTunes in almost a year! - no legalsounds as of yet).  Thank you, Phildel for sharing your great gift!

Press Play. Listen. Rewind. Repeat.

ACtually loving this

This may come as a surprise but, I actually really like Eminem.  It's a rarity for me to enjoy rap - yet amongst the 22,000+ and growing iTunes song library, every single album of his is there.  Despite his crazy antics, racial slurs and comments, I still listen to Eminem.  In a recent interview he was asked about what he thought of gay marriage.  His response surprised a lot of critics.  “I think if two people love each other, then what the hell? I think everyone should have the chance to be equally miserable.”  I gotta give it to him- Eminem is a surprising guy and I look forward to listening to his upcoming album "Recovery" coming out next Tuesday.  (It's been released internationally today).

Here's his first single from the album, "Not Afraid."

My favorite girl is leaving on a jet plane

Today is the day that my lil' girl Boo (aka my American Tabby cat named after the girl in Monsters Inc.) is heading back East to Connecticut to be with my family.  I know what you're thinking, she's a cat.  What's the big deal?

Well, Boo has been with me for the past 7 years and has been that loyal friend and companion.  She's moved with me from place to place as I tried to find a home.  Yeah, kinda like a dog, she actually knows that I'm her Dad and comes to me when I'm around.  She listens to me, listens to my crazy banter, my insane variety of music and always gives me that look that says "what the hell is wrong with you?"  She's brought me a lot of humor, love and energy over the past few years.  And now it's time to say goodbye, at least for awhile.

This was a decision not easily made but sometimes you have to give and take in life.  I know that my family back east will take care of her as if she was their own and she's in good hands.  The best part of her living with my family is that I can see her whenever I go home.  She'll always be my little girl.

Love you, Boo.

Introducing...Breakbot!

Hirsute, gym-short loving French DJ-remixer-producer born Thibaut Berland hooks up with Gallic soul-singer Irfane for water colored animation of peppy summertime dance groove. No full-length album yet, but I'll keep you posted.  Love this!

Katy Perry's "California Gurls"

Whatdya think?  The song is kinda catchy but still reminds me of Ke$ha's "Tik Tok."  Good tune for the summer but what's with the wigs Katy?  I sure hope it's not a homage to Kim Zolciak!

Time for a PSA

Just like crazy ass Kelly, I have to make this Public Service Announcement, to try and keep everyone's ears on this planet from bleeding.  What the hell is wrong with record companies these days?  Are you that hard up for money that you have to take reality "stars" and produce their singles/albums?  Have you lost your freaking mind?!  No seriously... just because someone is a drunken ass tool popular on shit-ass reality shows (Jersey Shore anyone?) or loves to get their wigs clipped (cough cough Kim cough) they are deserving of a song?  How much money are these ri-tards paying you?  I sure hope they are paying you otherwise I've lost all respect for you producers out there (you know who you are, weird-mohawk guy!).  I can't even post these AWFUL songs on my blog, I fear that they will melt down the entire Google-sphere and I will be to blame.  So I just ask you, Kim Zolciak, "The Situation" (BUTTERFACE should be your name!), Count-ass LuAnn, prostitution-whore Danielle and Ramona (please don't give her any ideas Andy!) to keep your shitty music to yourself!  You're making my and many other listeners ears bleed!  And to anyone who is actually buying this shit on iTunes, shame on you!  It's one thing to be curious, it's another to pay for this crap.  This is one time I will actually tell you to download that shit illegally.  Don't give these idiots more money for crap that doesn't deserve recognition.

At least our country's military & state prisions have new song choices for torture.  I'm sure by now, even the guards and lieutenants are tired of hearing Chris Brown's "Kiss Kiss."

Here are links to this shiz music being produced/already out there:

New from Sara B!

One of my ultimate favorite singer/songwriters, Sara Bareilles finally announced the name of her latest album "Kaliedascope Heart."  What's funny about it is that she claims she titled the album this because just like her last name, no one can spell it correctly!  Most recently, her fans fell in love with her song "Gravity" - which made several TV appearances and got some serious radio play.  I love this girl - ever since the day she opened for Mika years ago.  Most people think she rose to fame when she opened for Maroon 5, but she was known years before that, especially in her homeland of California.  The release date for her sophomore album is yet to be determined.  Let's hope soon!  For now, enjoy her newest single "King of Anything."

Lookout Beiber, here comes Chance

And a chance it was. The 12 year old Greyson Chance has become an overnight celebrity, with his cover of "Paparazzi" by Lady Gaga. He's already appeared on Ellen, received a phone call from Ms. Gaga herself and has more than 25million views of his performance. Not only that, with a following of more than 150,000 fans on YouTube, he is one of the top 30 most followed YouTube people! Watch out Justin Beiber- Chance has already hit puberty and he's only 12.  Chance will be Ellen's first artist for her NEW record label, Eleveneleven.

A Flashback Friday

She's been off the scene for quite a few years, despite her "Unplugged" album and two very quiet album releases of never heard before material.  The five time Grammy winning Lauryn Hill is said to be coming back out for a special appearance at the Rock the Bells festival (though which exact dates she'll be performing are still unknown).  Ms. Hill has always been a favorite of mine and though her 1998 Miseducation album is really her only full studio album to date, let's hope she has some new material up her sleeve.  Artists such as the beautiful Alicia Keys & souful Leela James have really taken her spot - though stylistically, I feel they have very different viewpoints from opposite walks of life.  Sony claims that Ms. Hill has been recording sporadically throughout the past years but still, a new studio album has yet to be released.

In honor of the incredibly talented Lauryn Hill, today's Flashback Friday includes some of her greatest hits.  We miss you Ms. Hill.  Come back soon!

Los Angeles meets Sweden

Though you may want to try and compare these guys to The Killers, think again.  Carolina Liar are coming to their own and they did it with absolute brilliance!  Produced by Max Martin (of Sweden) "Coming to Terms" is the band's first major label debut album - and it keeps you going from beginning to end.  It's just what I needed this afternoon, during the "lull" of the work day.  Thank God for my iTunes (being streamed from home) - otherwise I would be asleep at my desk.  That would probably not fair too well with the startup company I'm working for!

Besides the lead singer, Chad Wolf (residing in LA with the band but from South Carolina originally), the other members of the band are from Sweden.  I knew Sweden was it for me!  Besides the hits, "Show Me What I'm Looking For" and "I'm Not Over," my favorites from CL are "Coming To Terms," "Simple Life" and "When You Are Near."

Thirsty Thursday's Video & Album You Can't Live Without!

Many of you know that I love the British.  Though they are known for their bad food, their bad English (can you understand half of them?) and botched dental work, they do put out an extensive amount of incredible music.  Both the UK and Sweden seem to be countries that I go to the most for new music- I dunno what it is about these countries, but they are usually incredibly talented (or just a bit off their rocker) and on the cutting edge.  I am constantly checking their top 40 Billboard Charts, listening to Radio 1 when I have a free moment (which seems to be rare these days... except when I'm writing these postings... hmm....) and checking Pandora for spin-offs of the UK artists I love.

Though I can't quite recall how I came across Bat For Lashes (it may very well have been Legalsounds), her "Two Suns" album is fantastic, from beginning to end.  "Daniel" was the song that roped me in, "Pearl's Dream" is an excellent song & video, and "Sirens Song" had me addicted.  Natasha Khan (aka Bat For Lashes) has one of those sultry, sexy, jazz-like voices that I dig so much in female vocalists. And the fact that she has applied this eerily beautiful voice to this blended style of piano driven, fairy loving, with a flair of electronica, is brilliant.  According to the press release, Two Suns is "a record of modern-day fables exploring dualities on a number of levels – two lovers, two planets, two sides of a personality," bringing reflection about "the philosophy of the self and duality, examining the need for both chaos and balance, for both love and pain, in addition to touching on metaphysical ideas concerning the connections between all existence."

Featured on Wonky Pop previously, here's a few of my favorites from "Two Suns."  The video for "Pearl's Dream" is also one of my favorite music videos.

Two songs that should have been on the main album

These have classic Christina written all over them.  "Little Dreamer" and "Stronger Than Ever" should've been included on the main album version of "Bionic."  The first is definitely about her new baby.  I am not so sure if the second song has anything to do with her personal life.  I get that she was inspired by a lot of electronica artists for her latest work but these may have brought her to the top.  It's a rarity that bonus tracks would ever be released as a single, but if her PR team were to take one, I'd say release "Stronger Than Ever" as a single.  This song has power and really showcases Ms. Aguilera's voice.  Do you hear that Team Christina?  Release this as a single!

Happy Hump Day Truffle Shufflers

Though I don't have any "little monsters" like Lady Gaga, I am assuming I do have a few fans out there reading Wonky Pop (hello? are you there?).  It's hard to tell these days- no one seems to comment on the postings or re-tweets them, etc... are you listening, Wonky Poppers?  God that's an awful name for fans.  Sounds like some weird-gay-fetish.  Anyway, Chunk's daily truffle shuffle for this partly cloudy hump day is Delta Goodrem's "Innocent Eyes."  This beautiful Australian singer/actress/songwriter was signed to Sony at the very young age of 15 and has been a hit ever since.  Her third studio album, "Innocent Eyes" became the biggest selling record in Australia of the decade.  She is said to be working on her 4th studio album and soon to release this year.

Desnudate = Get Naked!

Becoming one of my favorite songs instantly on Christina's latest album "Bionic" is "Desnudate."  Basically, it's a song about telling a girl to get naked.  Normally this wouldn't be my cup of tea, but the beat is too damn good to wanna sing along!  In 2004, a Spanish singer by the name of David Bisbal (who actually has an incredible voice) released a song entitled "Desnudate Mujer" and peaked to #6 on the Hot Latin Billboard Charts.  It's a passionate and extremely sexual love song (see video below), pleading a woman to get naked and be unfaithful with her partner.  Christina took this song to the next level.  Let's hope this becomes a single soon enough.  Erotic!

The red lips have spoken

And there is a reason for that.  Because she is the shiz.  She is the cat's meow.  Christina Aguilera is the only person under the age of 30 to be nominated by Rolling Stones 100 greatest singers of all time.

Today is the day- her album has finally dropped.  Here's to hoping she goes platinum!  If you haven't downloaded/purchased her album today, you're missing out.  This may become my favorite album of 2010!

Here is Ms. Xtina singing "Bionic," "Not Myself Tonight" and her hit "Beautiful" on the Today Show in NYC.

the only good part of MTV's Movie Awards

Yes, I am a bit Christina crazed.  And I had no desire to watch who won the best kiss with a vampire award ceremony yesterday on MTV. Thank God for the internet and YouTube.  This performance was just awesome.  She nailed it.  And I have to give her PR department props for having her perform a medley of "Bionic," "Not Myself Tonight" and "Woohoo"(which will be her 2nd single off of her new album releasing tomorrow!).  Her hair looked awesome, her outfits and stage presence were so hot and she is definitely back!  Oh, and look closely, you'll see a glowing LED heart on her coslopus. Watch out you other pop girls- Ms. Aguilera is going to take this year by storm!  If her album does poorly, that would be a complete shock to me.

It's a maniac monday - and i wish it was sunday

Ticket has been purchased for the Robyn/Kelis/Dan Black concert on July 24th- did you get yours fellow San Franciscans?  Here's a tune off of Robyn's soon to be released album (though I've already got myself a copy "Body Talk Pt. 1")-- "Fembot."  The lyrics are so kick ass!

Why Sweden rocks my world

Robyn.  Body Talk. Part 1. 14 June 2010.  Everyone knows her from her hit singles "Show Me Love" and "Do You Know (What It Takes)" but I know her from her career that continued from there.  Her sound has become much more dance-electronica-pop since her Grammy nominee and though she's made a name for herself internationally, she hasn't really broken through in the US.  It's a shame because she is incredibly creative and talented.  In my opinion, she's taken the spotlights that were once filled by such great artists as Cyndi Lauper and The Eurythmics.

Her first single off of her 5th studio album (which will be released in three parts in 2010) is "Dancing On My Own."  It's Robyn at her best- great beat that keeps you moving.  I cannot wait for her to release a video for "Fembot" and "None of Dem" (which features Royksopp, another Wonky Pop favorite).  Robyn is also touring with Kelis (milkshake anyone?) in the states to promote her Body Talk album on the "All Hearts Tour."  They'll both be in San Francisco on July 24th, along with Dan Black & Far East Movement!  I'll be there for sure!

Sweden, how I love you so!

Chunk's Daily Truffle Shuffle

It's Friday. Finally.  How did this week seem so long, it was only four days?!  I'd high-kick it like Chunk but I just don't have the strength, energy or the talent.  Got to work about 30 minutes early today, which gives me some time to get a few things posted.  It's gonna be a long one- I can just FEEL it.  Maybe it's the mugginess in the air today- rain again?? REALLY?? Really?!  Come on San Francisco!  This isn't January!  Where is our sun?!

Chunk pressed play and did the shuffle and as a result, we got old school Rihanna blaring out my MacBook early this morning with "There's A Thug In My Life."  It's amazing how much this song is completely unrelated to my life.  The closest thing to a "thug" in my life would be the homeless guy with the Giants jacket, standing at the 5th street ramp exit every night on my commute home.  "Starvin' Like Marvin" his sign sometimes reads, if he's holding it properly.  Some days, he just doesn't care and it appears that he's sleeping...  too much food that day I guess.

Thirsty Thursday's Video of the Day

I am SO EXCITED that one of my favorite albums of 2010 has finally released a video for their hit single "The Ghost Inside."  Broken Bells (remember James Mercer from The Shins?) has released their second single from their self-titled debut album and it's awesome.  Move over MGMT, you're 10 minutes of fame is over (sidenote: I was extremely disappointed with their sophomore release "Congratulations."  It should have been called "excuse the mess."  I can't even post one song from that album on WP because it was so bad!  I don't agree with any of the critics out there siting it to be a continuation of greatness.  Stick to what the people like- you ruined it for me!)  Their first single made it to #25 on the Billboard Charts -- I am hoping that this one does even better.  From beginning to end, Broken Bells album is top notch and an also an album you can't live without!

Lady Gaga is out to tease us!

Ok, so I know I've been giving Christina Aguilera a lot of support these past few weeks, but I cannot forget Lady Gaga's great songs and videos that follow suit.  After all, La Gaga has been categorized by Wikipedia as "Wonky Pop!"  Her next single appears to be the spicey "Alejandro" and she's released a teaser to the upcoming music video.  Love the hair, the black & white footage and the foot stomping dance moves!  Just recently, La Gaga was on Larry King live and she admitted to being diagnosed "borderline positive with lupus."  Lupus is a horrible disease that attacks the body's immune system, nervous system and muscles.  For Gaga's sake, I hope that this stays borderline or clears up all together.  She is a tremendous performer and I'd hate to see her career end so early.

Excuse the interruption...

A lil' bit Granola

Apparently I'm a bit behind on a few artists and their latest album releases. And in the almost 2 years that this blog has been around, I've failed to mention the famous singing-surfer-Hawaiian.  Such is the case with Jack Johnson, who just yesterday released his 5th studio album yesterday.  This is more like the Jack I remember from his beginning years and I totally dig this album.  It's perfect timing for the summer months ahead of us.  Though "You and Your Heart" is his first single off the album, my favorite tracks are "To the Sea," "At Or With Me" and "From the Clouds."  I think this album showcases what JJ is best at: casual beats and groovy lyrics.  Shake up the lemonade and get the cookies (or other things you might normally smoke enjoy while listening to JJ).
