Cover: Robyn does Bjork

Staying true to her style, Robyn covered Bjørk's "Hyperballad" at the Polar Music Prize ceremony.  And I must admit, it's absolutely fantastic (so much so that she should put it on Body Talk Pt 3).  Despite some critics saying Robyn doesn't live up to Bjork's voice & talent (duh, she gave it her own twist), I think this is a great rendition to the talented and often oddly dressed Icelandic singer.  How do you think Robyn did?

Watch: lady gaga debuts new ballad

Last night at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota (my home state!), Ms. Gaga debuted a new ballad titled "Living On the Radio."  It's actually a beautiful song.  But I can't watch the video -- she looks like a freaked out mess.  Courtney Love, is that you?

Monday Morning Wake Up Call

Back to reality after spending a few days in Katy Perry's hometown, Santa Barbara.  Why can't we just have 4 day work weeks all the time?

If you're not awake yet, WAKE UP!  There's an entire day ahead of you.  Still haven't grown tired of Example's "Won't Go Quietly" album.  Though I've featured this song, it deserves to be posted again - cause it's such a feel good song.  Puts a grin on my face like I just sniffed glue.  It's a definite top 3 of 2010.  If you haven't checked him out yet, DO IT.

I feel like God's playing a cruel joke on me

No, seriously.  Don't judge.  I've driven 5 miles, more than 380 miles from San Francisco to Santa Barbara, to escape the fog & the cold that refuses to leave the Bay Area.  And what does God hand me while I'm down here?  More effing fog!  Did it follow me down here?  Does he have some ill-will for me?  Did I wrong it in some way?  I just wanted one weekend, with sun and 80 degree weather.  And God decides that this is the weekend the shit-ass weather has to not only consume San Francisco but also an area so far south, it could be in another state!

Fortunately, as I type this @ the Santa Barbara Borders downtown, there is sun.  But who knows how long it will last.  So far, the only enjoyment of this trip has been the group of dolphins that swam on over to the beach by our hotel.  That was pretty sweet.

God, shed your light- isn't that how it's supposed to go?

Now don't get all crazy thinking I'm a Bible banger or the like.  I'm really not about to get into my spiritual & religious beliefs on here.  This is a site about music, right?  And the occasional "pity me" party can't hurt?  I suppose I should just lighten up... or is it, light up?

Sky Ferreira with a Lily Allen twist!

Talk about a much different sound than "One" or "Obsession."  Here's Sky Ferreira's "Whatcha Gonna Do."  I'm totally digging this song but can't help but think, Lily Allen, did you influence this girl a bit?  As long as it was with your music and nothing else....

In loving memory

Today marks the 9th year since R&B artist Aaliyah was laid to rest.  The Princess of R&B sold more than 32 million albums worldwide and is known for redefining the ideals of R&B and Hip Hop.  She is missed and remembered by her many fans and loving family.

Introducing...Kids of 88

Ever wonder what it would be like if the Graffiti throughout the streets of San Francisco, New York, LA and cities alike, came to life?  Well, wonder no more.  The Kids of 88 have brought it to life in their new video & single "Downtown."  This New Wave, ElectroPop duo hailing from New Zealand have been friends for 10 years and best known for their 2008 hit single "My House."  Not much else is really known about the duo as they are pretty reserved when it comes to interviews.  They cite their influences as "Groove, mood, and slutty arrangements.  16th hi hats and hand claps.  Culture and couture, gangtser and glamour."  If MGMT & Depeche Mode had a baby, this would be it.  In my opinion, Kids of 88 "Sugarpills" album far surpasses MGMT's sophomore effort "Congratulations."  This album will have you on your feet, hoping the beat never stops.

The Dead or Alive inspired "Apart of You" will have you reminiscing of big hair bands and gaucho pants.  The hand-clapping "Downtown" will keep you begging for more.  The heavier Nine Inch Nails-esque "Feed the Birds" is one to surely keep you motivated at the gym or while driving long distance.  The semi-slowed down "San Fran" is a nice tribute to the Full House gang and when life was that much simpler. And "SQRL" is a total dance anthem that is sure to get the crowd stomping, with its climatic build up just two minutes into the song.  This one is going to be on repeat the remainder of this week (and most likely into next).

Listen: Katy Perry's Teenage Dream album

Quite possibly, the best album of 2010.

Katy Perry - Teenage Dream (2010)

Another great ballad from Sara B

It may be no "Gravity," but "Hold My Heart" is bound to do well on the Hot 100 and especially the Adult Contemporary charts.  We're just two weeks away from the sophomore release of Sara Bareilles' "Kaleidoscope Heart" and I am so excited.  Her "King of Anything" is already doing well on the charts (has even made it's mark on the Hot 100).  Can't wait to hear the rest Sara!

"A perfect nightmare" is the perfect song

Another beautiful R&B singer hailing from Barbados, Shontelle has supported some great musicians and bands on their headlining tours.  Beyonce, Kevin Rudolf and New Kids On the Block have toured with Shontelle over the past couple of years, and this year, she may be headlining her very first tour.  With her sophomore album being released on September 21st, the internet has already been a buzz with a few leaks coming from her new work, with Rodney "Darkchild" Jenkins influence all over it.  Her first single "Impossible" was released back in February of this year and didn't make a mark on the Hot 100 until May (getting on the charts at number 13).  Though she has had great success in the UK, maybe this album will appeal to the American market.  Her said to be second single is "A Perfect Nightmare," and was produced by Darkchild (Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson).  Unlike the her previous ballad, this ballad takes off with a dance driven beat after a soft beginning.  I am digging it.  Could this be the single that launches Shontelle into the Top 10?

Breaking News: Lady Gaga leaves Cherry Tree Records

The Queen of Twitter has parted ways with Cherry Tree Records, according to the label themselves.  Could this mean Lady will have her very own record label?  I like where this is headed.  To be continued...

Maybe I'm an emo kid at heart

One of the best alternative-rock-punk bands to see live (their energy is incredible), is going to be back in the studio on September 20th after a two year hiatus to start recording their next album.  This will be their seventh studio album since the band's formation in 1997.  The album is expected to be released sometime in early 2011.  I. Cannot. Wait.  I.  Die.

Cover: Teenage Dream - Katelyn Clampett

I have been playing Katy Perry's latest brilliant new creation non-stop since I previewed it earlier this week... and I got stopped in my tracks when I heard a Wonky Pop favorite, Katelyn Clampett, cover Teenage Dream.  What a beautiful rendition of the song - really showcases the lyrics that Katy wrote for this smash hit - and shows the world that Katelyn can sing!  Awesome Katelyn.  Now if I could only get Katelyn to cover Ray LaMontagne's Let It Be Me........

Listen: Brandon Flowers "Swallow It"

Finally, Brandon Flowers departs from the comfortable music stylings of The Killers, where he's been home to for 8 years and gets a little experimental.  His first solo album, Flamingo is already getting rave reviews by critics & music bloggers alike, as snippets are coming to the surface.  Here's one that Brandon is particularly proud of, "Swallow It."

“You could not swallow it / No baby you’re not ready, slow down / And take the time to evolve,” sings Flowers on this dreamy, piano-assisted track.  Listen below!

Brandon Flowers - Swallow It by Wonky Pop

out of the vault: Lady Gaga

Though I'm about eight months late on this, I just discovered this little gem by Lady Gaga and Midway State.  It's a cover of Peter Gabriele & Kate Bush's "Don't Give Up," which is one of my ultimate favorite songs for inspiration.  Though Nathan Ferraro doesn't possess the same voice control as Peter, it's still a beautiful version of the song.  It showcases LG's voice and that even stripping away all of the dance beats and crazy costumes, she still has something special.  See the Lady Gaga version below, as well as the original and a few other covers of this great song.  The original has me picturing John Candy, riding in the train thru Chicago, reminiscing on all the great times he had with Steve Martin (remember the pillow incident?).  One of my favorites is still Maire Brennan (aka Enya's sister) and Michael McDonald - unfortunately, it's a hard one to find online.

Official Download: Kanye West "Power" remix

Kanye West announced that his 5th studio album "Dark Twisted Fantasy" will be released on November 16th.  He will also be making another appearance at the VMA's on September 12th- will he steal someone's thunder again this year?

Download the remix to "Power" here (featuring Jay Z).  See the 1:43 moving artwork of "Power" below (when will the full video drop already??)

New Kids on the block had a bunch of hits

Granola? Check.  Yogurt? Check.  Katy Perry's latest greatest creation blaring from iTunes? Check.  Flashback Friday, thanks to Chunk's Truffle Shuffle = LFO "Girl On Tv."  What the hell?  Yeah, completely forgot that in my collection of 22,000 songs in iTunes, there lies the Light Funky Ones.  But don't judge me - cause I know you like a few of their songs too.  Yeah, YOU!  You can't tell me that you don't know "Summer Girls" or "Girl On TV."  Though they sort of fall into that "one hit wonder" category, had many failed attempts to reunite their band, they definitely left a mark in the music world in the 90's - even if just for a good laugh.  TGIF everyone!

Listen: The Ting Tings "Hands"

Ting Tings  new single, "Hands" - it's like the Scissor Sisters meets Electronic Pop (without that falsetto singing dude).  Can't wait to hear more!

Go on over to their Facebook, where you can get a free download!

Red One samples Iko Iko - seriously?

Red One, you should be ashamed of yourself.  Did you give all your originality creativity to Lady Gaga? And the only thing left for this disaster with Alexandra Burke is a Belle Stars rip off?  Actually, it's worse than a Belle Stars rip off - it's like a nursery rhyme, dipped in porn.  Sorry Ms. Burke, Leona Lewis' success on X Factor has far outdone yours.  Good luck with the re-release.  See the comparisons below.

Prediction: Katy Perry's next single to be Firework

Already played this song more than 10 times, it's so damn catchy.  Maybe it's the build up with the strings to the dance dropping chorus, or maybe I'm just obsessing over Katy Perry's latest album of sheer creative genius.  But I guarantee you, anyone that didn't work on Teenage Dream is kicking their own ass, because this album is going to go to #1.  With two singles already in the top 10, this has GOT to be her next single to get her third!  California Girls has jumped to #3 this week and Teenage Dream is right behind her at #5!  She's even got "Circle the Drain" at #58!  On another note, Taylor ican'tswingSwift has plummeted from the top 10 to off the Top 100 completely.

Kelly will be rockin' her 3D Glasses

I can't help it.  This song gets played every day because it's just so damn good.  Maybe you will disagree, but I really think Kelly Rowland is going to break into the US music scene again this year.  Though she did have one of the best summer dance songs last year, along with her French DJ pal David GuettaGetahaircutalready, this year, she's struggled to have a solid solo hit record.  I think this one will be it for her.  Commander has also received a lot of praise (though it's not one of my favorites) and her second single "Rose Colored Glasses" is an up-beat ballad that's already hit radio.  I hope it does well, as I think it's a catchy one.  I'm anxiously awaiting her video to be released (already shot) and will be in 3D!  See the beautiful shots below!

Introducing...Katelyn Clampett!

Indie artists are so rarely recognized for their extreme talent and incredible writing.  And with that, it brings me great joy & excitement to introduce you all to Katelyn Clampett.  Among the many new songs & artists I have recently been introduced to over the last few weeks, her songs have been ringing through my head more than most.  And it's time to unleash her to you, my readers.

Though a girl like Taylor Swift has a look, a personality and playful songs, she still is lacking the soul and voice of a truly great singer (sorry to you TS fans, but it's true).  I honestly think she has a fantastic marketing team (Christina, maybe you should get in touch with them) and because of that, has become so successful.  I have yet to have one of my friends say "wow, that Taylor Swift can really sing."  Move over Taylor, Katelyn is in town.

Though I hate to make comparisons to other artists out there, I think you will find some similarities amongst Katelyn's good tunes.  Katelyn's lyrics contain the sweetness such as Taylor Swift & Colbie Caillat, the personality & charm of Sara Bareilles (from what I can see in her videos) and the classic beauty similar to Scarlett Johansson (it must be the red lipstick & blonde hair).  The 22 year old from North Carolina was most recently seen on American Idol Season 9, where she won a gold ticket and headed to Hollywood.  Though she wasn't successful on the show (thank God because we all know what happens to the winners these days), Katelyn stayed in LA and is now making her mark, as a singer-songwriter.

To date, Katelyn has released her catchy single "Sweet Tea" on iTunes (it's been on constant repeat at the gym, in my car and at the office, and expect it on repeat soon).  Various bloggers have leaked her auto-tune sounding/electronic up-beat Ke$ha-like "If U Got the Balls" (which if Ke$ha didn't sound like a Valley girl trying to be a singer...).  I honestly think that if Katelyn wanted to reach a greater audience, now would be the time to release this as a single - it would most definitely be a big player on the Top 40 Airwaves (hint hint!).  Slower balads and AC music isn't doing it right now.. it's still summer.  Perhaps this fall, the airwaves could resonate with "Sweet Tea."  I'm expecting some record label to snatch her up any day now.

Hear Katelyn's versatility in music below (& a video released just days ago on her YouTube) and show your support by purchasing "Sweet Tea" on iTunes today and following Katelyn on Twitter!  I'm hoping I can score an exclusive interview with Katelyn in the near future.

A-ha says goodbye with the last hurrah

A-ha is saying farewell to its fans with this single "The Last Hurrah."  It's a bittersweet tribute to all the great videos and singles of years past.  Did you even know A-ha was still around after "Take On Me?"

Introducing...Edei

For you Girls Aloud fanatics out there, you may remember Emma Deigmann on their last tour.  For the rest of us, we'll know her as Edie, the 21 year old beautiful singer with soul from the UK.  She's been busy working on her debut album (set to be released sometime this fall - it's gonna be a great fall indeed!) and has released her first single, "In My Bed."  The song is not as dance-driven as the current lady sensations on top of the charts, but this song is really driven by Edei's voice.  It's nice to hear an artist that has Top 40 potential not using auto-tune or other computer generated techniques to manipulate their voice.

The same team that helped Joss Stone become a household name has been busy at work, helping Edei find her musical style.  Edei is beautiful, has a solid voice and a pop-jazz-rhythm & blues blended style, that is currently lacking from Top 40.  Her first single should appeal to listeners of all ages.  It's a good blend of Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse and The Saturdays, if you removed the up-beat dance tempos and replaced it with a few horns and some funk.  Mixing credits on her album include Tom Emlhirst, whose previous credits include Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" and Adele's "Chasing Pavements."  Vist her site to download a free acoustic version of "In My Bed" and show your support by downloading the song on iTunes.  Can't wait to hear what the rest of the album has to offer!

If she could turn back tiiiiooommmeee

The true Diva is back.  After a 10 year hiatus from producing new music, Cher is back in the studio working on her next creation.  She has been telling reporters that though it won't be a dance album (such as her "Believe") but will be taking her back to her roots of rock.  Think if "If I Could Turn Back Time."  She's also said to be working with the great ballad songstress, Diane Warren.  She's said to be in the beginning stages of production, so it could be the end of this year before we hear anything leak.  She does have two songs on the upcoming "Burlesque" movie, co-starring Christina Aguilera.

This could either be a total bomb or a big hit.  Are you excited for Cher's next musical endeavor?

Old Lady Gets Down At Walmart

Another cure for the Case of the Mondays... get down like Grandma!

Looks like someone has a case of the Mondays

"I believe you'd get your ass kicked for saying something like that, man." - Lawrence from Office Space

It's only 10:30AM and already fecal matter has hit the fan.  Is it a bad sign that during your first 2 hours of work, you could throw your fist thru your computer monitor?  Possibly.  I must be suffering from a COTHM (Case of the Mondays).  There's really no need to go into further detail as to why I may end up with a bloody fist this morning, and I really don't want to damage my pretty LED MacBrook Pro monitor.  Fortunately, there is music to get me thru this day and hopefully, speed up time.

I've exposed you to a lot of pop music over the past few weeks, and as I mentioned on Friday, it's time to switch it up a bit.  Though I still have plenty of auto-tuned, girl bands and the like to share with you, here's the new single from a well-known rock band of the 90's,  Jimmy Eat World.  I was so excited when I found out they were releasing a new album (due out 9/28) and this song really kicks ass.  This should help your Monday.

Here's confirmation: Teletubbies & Power Rangers are gay

Before Katy, there was KT

Though her success and fan attention hasn't been anything like that of Ms. Katy Perry, KT Tunstall had gone 5x Platinum (UK) on her first album in 2004, "Eye To the Telescope." Who could forget the catchy "Black Horse & the Cherry Tree"?  She also sold more than one million copies of her first album in the US.  Needless to say, this singer/songwriter from Scottland has won the hearts of many (especially the ladies with her "Suddenly I See" single) and I hope her latest creation to come will do great in the US.  Despite comparisons to such artists as Dido and Sheryl Crow, KT has been head strong and continues down her own unique path of music. "Tiger Suit" is due out September 28 - and said to have some "nature techno sounds."  It has also been recorded in a solar-paneled studio, keeping her carbon footprint at a minimum.  I think we can expect great things from KT on her next album.

KT Tunstall - Fade Like A Shadow

Flashback Friday

Okay, so I've been filling your ears with a lot of pop music these days.  It's time to turn it over to some heavier hitters than can rock it.  You really can't go wrong by starting your Friday morning off with a little Whitney Houston Skunk Anansie.  This multi-platinum English alternative rock band were heavy hitters in the 90's.  After almost an 8 year hiatus, Skin and her boys are back.  They've already released "My Ugly Boy," the first single from their upcoming fourth studio album (to be released in September).  Think Stone Temple Pilots with a rough-around-the-edges female singer.  TGIF!

Thanks Weinerbrow.

The Tings Tings are hard at work

Mark your calendars for October 11th - that's when The Ting Tings will be releasing their first single from their sophomore album.  "Hands" was written by The Ting Tings and mixed by Calvin Harris.  I am hoping that we will at least get a taste of hearing their greatness before October.  So far, all I've been able to find online are live, amateur footage on YouTube - but it sounds like it's gonna be good.  Rihanna has said to have collaborated with TripleT and they have signed onto Jay Z's record label.  This fall is going to release some incredible music!  To date, TripleT is still one of my top 3 concerts I have seen in my entire life - cannot wait to see them again on their next tour.

WATCH: Christina Aguilera sing in "Burlesque"

Whatdya think?  Even if this movie sucks, you get to see Christina sing & dance.  It may actually do well.. may...

Get that heart pumping

California has a reputation that it's always warm and sunny.  Well that is not the case for Northern California, especially this summer in San Francisco.  With everyone's eyes and ears on the happenings of the Prop 8 trial, most are oblivious to the constant grey fog, engulfing the city on a daily basis.  Though San Francisco has always been known to have an "Indian Summer," this is getting a bit ridiculous.  I feel like I haven't seen the sun in a few weeks, the temperature never seems to reach above 62 and it's always around 50 degrees at night.  Where's my motivation to race home to enjoy the few remaining hours of sunshine?  Where's my motivation to do anything, if that?  Well, thank God there is some good new music out there to keep my heart rate up when I'm at my fog covered gym, just hoping the sun will peak it's head out and shine thru the rusty old Potrero Hill windows.

Jonsi (some of you may know of him as the lead singer from Sigur Ros) is currently on my "Stairmaster" playlist (I couldn't come up with a more creative name for it) and the song "Animal Arithmetic" came on right as I stepped onto the stair master.  Motivation I desperately needed this morning, from this Icelandic genius.  The video is just as heart racing as is the song, without being "pop sounding" or dance/techno style.  It was perfect to get my heart racing and to stay motivated, knowing I still had to drag my ass to the dungeon office today.  Hope this helps your Thirsty Thursday!

WATCH: M.I.A. XXXO

Though I can't say much about her latest creation, M.I.A.'s "XXXO" I love.  Here's the video!

It's official: I've overdosed on music

You read that headline correctly.  Like a drug addict, I've officially overdosed on music these past few days.  Yesterday, my head began to spin after receiving a bunch of new stuff - amazingly good new stuff - via emails and by word of fellow bloggers & tweeters/twotters/tweakers...  There's so much I want to share with you, but having a full time job can sometimes restrict me from getting to it fast enough.  So over the next few days, expect to be introduced to a lot of new great artists - ones you should definitely be watching.

On another fun note, the Wonky Pop blog format will be changing once again in the next couple of weeks.  I am extremely excited to revamp this site to bring you nothing but the best in music.

If you have any suggestions/comments/questions etc, as always, feel free to Twitter me, Facebook me or email me at wonkypopp@gmail.com

Happy Humpty Dumpty Day!

I love this crazy girl

Katie Melua does it again.  This time, with elevators.  Brilliant video by Mike Batt.  Her album "The House" is available now.

THIS is how a true musician does a cover song

Sara Bareilles, you continue to win me over.  Her recent rendition of Beyonce's "Single Ladies" was performed for Billboards Mashup Mondays, and it's friggin' sweet!  Please get a venue for San Francisco for your upcoming tour!

This Teenage Dream is sexy, but a bit boring.

Love this song, but the video is just okay.  She's had much better than this!  The guy is hot, she looks hot but other than that, this video is just blah.  It's cute, summery and fun but just doesn't do it for me.. maybe it's the "frosted" look to the video that's just not working with me.  Did she just get a bunch of her friends together and go out drinking, dancing and partying around the beach?  Well, maybe in that case, it's nice that Katy Perry can stay grounded too - and not have to go for shock value (hear that, Lady Gaga?).  That's what it looks like to me.  Thank God the song is catchy.

P!nk Please Don't Leave Me (New Version )

How CUTE is this? New version of P!nk's "Please Don't Leave Me" with her husband-ex-husband-now-husband, Corey Hart.

Watch: Cold War, Janelle Monae

One of my favorites right now, Janelle Monae has released her second video from her sophomore album "The ArchAndroid."  "Cold War" is a beautiful song and it's a shame that neither one of her singles from this album have charted.  The world doesn't know what they're missing by not having Janelle a part of it.  This girl is so creative and breaking ground as a female without being slutty, scary or too pop sounding.  Maybe she's not doing what's popular right now, and that's quite alright for her.  She's an artist and a talented one.  As she's mentioned in interviews before, she doesn't mind coming across as androgynous.

listen to Robyn's Body Talk Part 2!

Thought it's not out until September 6th (please support Robyn by purchasing it), Body Talk Pt. 2 has leaked... and it's friggin' good!  This is a more energetic, dance filled 8-song-album then Pt. 1.  I have a feeling Robyn is gonna save the best for last.  My favorites (though, truthfully they are all my favorites) are "Criminal Intent," "Love Kills," "Hang With Me" and "You Should Know Better (featuring Snoop Dogg.)"  Robyn, I cannot wait for Body Talk Pt. 3!  Keep up the incredible work girl.

Chunk's Truffle Shuffle for Monday

It must be something like "Run Fat Boy Run" because Chunk has been MIA the past few weeks.  Well, he's back and has helped me choose today's random song.  Chunk laid of the potato chips this morning and helped choose the shuffle of the day by spinning that wheel and up came the Canadian singer/songwriter Anjulie's "Boom."  I'm honestly too tired for this Monday to write anymore.  So google the girl.  :)

Flashback Friday: Only one good eye

Though Left Eye is no longer with us (may she rest in hip hop Heaven), the legacy that is TLC will live on forever.  Here's the iconic 1995's "Waterfalls."  Odd fact: Left Eye's portion of the rap was actually scribed onto her casket. TGIF!

Countries Rock stars should rule

This is too funny.

Lather Rinse Repeat

Throughout the rolling hills of San Francisco, people were blasting their sounds of victory from Love vs. Hate last night.  Though most of it was probably tunes you'd hear at gay bars, the energy in the air was so different than November 2008, when Prop 8 was first voted into place.  This country is on a way to change.  Moving on... despite a few postings about poop lyrics and flop movies, I wanted to share with you some more songs that are on rePEAT on my iPOD.  Happy Thirsty Thursday!

Keane ft. K'Naan - "Stop For a Minute" - catchy tune, has a OneRepublic feel to it.

Kelly Rowland - "Rose Colored Glasses" - absolutely LOVE this song.  The lyrics are great, the upbeat ballad is just perfect.  If this is any indication of what her new album will be like, it's gonna be damn good.  It's so nice to hear Kelly with out that homeless guy.

Robyn - "Cry When You Get Older" - nothing beats seeing this girl live but damn, this song is just feel good summer.

Carmen Reece - "Right Here" (Dave Aude Club Mix) - this will have you on your toes!

Natalia Kills - "Mirrors" - seductive blend of Rihanna, Lady Gaga & Xtina.  Also check out "Zombie."  She is one to watch!

Smashing Pumpkins - "Tonight Tonight" - nothing like 90's rock!
